200 Years of the Music Collection: A Sounding Heritage
1826 is considered the founding year of the Music Collection of the Austrian National Library. At that time, the Prefect of the Court Library, Moritz von Dietrichstein, had materials from the Court Music Archive transferred to the library and merged with the existing holdings. Today, the Music Collection is Austria’s largest music archive, a scholarly reference library, and the repository of invaluable original manuscripts ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Bruckner and Berg. The anniversary will be celebrated with three special music salons on 20 October, 11 November, and 9 December.
70 Years of the Globe Museum: Staging the World
Founded in 1956, the Globe Museum of the Austrian National Library is unique worldwide and of great cultural and scholarly significance. Through 250 precious terrestrial, celestial, and planetary globes, it illustrates how scientific and cultural ideas about our planet and the universe have evolved. To mark the anniversary, the Globe Museum will open a new multimedia exhibition space on the theme “Globes in Everyday Life, Art, and Popular Culture.” It will be presented as part of the event “Staging the World” on 24 September.
30 Years of the Literature Archive: At the Heart of Literature
Whether poems by Ingeborg Bachmann, plays by Ödön von Horváth, or novels by Marlene Streeruwitz and Peter Handke—the originals, including works by two Nobel Prize laureates, are preserved in the Literature Archive of the Austrian National Library, one of the most important institutions of its kind in the German-speaking world. For 30 years, the archive has been collecting traces of literary, journalistic, and philosophical work in Austria from the 20th century to the present day. To mark the anniversary, the online exhibition “In the Laboratory of Cultural History. 30 Years of the Literature Archive,” available from 14 September, offers insights into this extraordinary collection.
