Der wertvolle, historische Bestand von Handschriften der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek ist ein wahrer Schatz. Neben reich illuminierten Büchern mit kunstvoll dekorierten Einbänden finden sich auch Textschriften mit schlicht gehaltenen Umschlägen. Als Bezugsmaterialien wurden Leder, Pergament oder kostbare Textilien wie Samt und Seide verwendet. Die vielen Jahrhunderte haben Gebrauchsspuren an den oft fragilen Originaleinbänden hinterlassen, die nun mit großer Sorgfalt restauriert und konserviert werden – damit auch zukünftige Generationen in unserer Geschichte blättern können.
