The Austrian National Library (ANB) preserves a unique cultural heritage spanning many centuries and at the same time acts as a modern centre for information, education and research. This bridging function between the rich heritage of the past and the demands of today's information society requires responsible action with a focus on the future.
As a creator of values and a driving force, the ANB also strives to be a role model in the field of sustainability. Our vision of a sustainable library is reflected in our sustainability strategy and in the many measures aimed at the protection of our environment and at a mode of operation that makes us fit for the future. Sustainability is not only a guiding principle, it should also be an integral part of our daily activities.
Our all-encompassing sustainability strategy provides the framework for all of the ANB’s environment-related initiatives. It combines environmental, economic and social aspects, thus creating the basis for sustainable development in all areas of our organisation.
The ANB has set itself the ambitious goal of significantly reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Our climate protection roadmap defines concrete measures – from optimising the energy efficiency of our buildings to promoting sustainable mobility – that will help us achieve this goal.
Each year we prepare a greenhouse gas balance. This helps us to measure the progress of our climate protection measures and to implement further target-specific optimisation activities.
A steering group has been set up to actively promote sustainability. It consists of employees from various departments and meets quarterly to evaluate progress, develop new measures and advance sustainability projects.
Sustainability is a shared concern, and we warmly invite you to become actively involved. Whether by making suggestions for sustainable improvements in your field of work, participating in initiatives of the steering group or taking small measures in your everyday life – your contribution counts! Together we can achieve our goals and shape a sustainable future.
Please note the opening hours during the holidays.
The department and the reading room of picture archives and graphics department remain closed on January 22, 2025.
