The baroque world in the State Hall
The State Hall – built in the 18th century as part of the former Court Library – comes as a surprise with its length of almost 80 metres and a height of 20 metres. An elaborately decorated dome and numerous frescoes create an imperial flair. Four magnificent Venetian globes with a diameter of over one metre complete the heart of the Austrian National Library.
With over 200,000 historical books, the unique library hall is one of the most beautiful in the world and was last subjected to extensive conservation measures in 1955. From July to December 2022, the 300-year-old baroque splendour was given a new shine and will be open to all visitors again from 1 January 2023.
The occasional restoration work is still being carried out in the State Hall. This may lead to sporadic minor disturbances, above all of an acoustic nature. We apologise for any inconvenience.
