The Austrian National Library’s valuable historical collection of manuscripts is a true treasure. Alongside richly illuminated books with ornately decorated bindings, there are also text manuscripts with plain covers. Leather, parchment or precious textiles such as velvet and silk were used as covering. The many centuries have left traces of use on the often fragile original bindings, which are now being restored and conserved with great care – so that future generations can also leaf through our history.
