“Land of Folk Music” project
At the heart of this online project run by the Austrian Folk Song Institute is archive material from folk song archives that demonstrates the different regional characteristics of music-making past and present. Examples of recordings and sheet music played in everyday life and on special occasions demonstrate these differences very effectively. A great deal of attention is also paid to the story of how certain pieces and customs arose and developed, including both widespread traditions and special regional features.
The acoustic journey takes you from private fieldwork to the studio productions of Carinthian choirs, and from alpine three-part singing and fiddle playing to the brass bands of the Bohemian Forest.
