The baroque world in the State Hall

The State Hall – built in the 18th century as part of the former Court Library – comes as a surprise with its length of almost 80 metres and a height of 20 metres. An elaborately decorated dome and numerous frescoes create an imperial flair. Four magnificent Venetian globes with a diameter of over one metre complete the heart of the Austrian National Library.

With over 200,000 historical books, the unique library hall is one of the most beautiful in the world and was last subjected to extensive conservation measures in 1955. Now, the 300-year-old Baroque splendour is getting a makeover: the State Hall will therefore be closed for restoration work from 1 July to 31 December 2022. As a digital substitute and to bridge the waiting time, the State Hall can be visited while the work is being carried out as part of a new » 360-degree online tour.

Details of the extensive restoration process can be followed » here at regular intervals.
