A finger on the pulse of literature
Whether it be the poems of Ingeborg Bachmann, plays by Ödön von Horvath or novels by Peter Handke, you can find the originals in the Literary Archive, one of the most important institutions of its kind in the German-speaking region. We collect and acquire literary legacies, both pre- and post-death, of Austrian authors from the 20th century (notably from 1945) and make them available for research purposes.
We were recently able to acquire a significant portion of the literary estate of the Jewish intellectual and salonnière » Bertha Zuckerkandl.
The library, the collections and museums are open as usual.
Please bring your 2G proof. FFP2 masks have to be worn everywhere in the building. Also at the reading desks.
The Austrian National Library will automatically extend all currently valid annual library cards of all categories free of charge after the reopening for the duration of the corona-related closure period (20 days). Holders do not have to take any further steps.
Due to construction work, the Literary Archive is currently not accessible via the Gottfried-von-Einem-Stiege. The new entrance is located close by, towards Michaelerplatz, and is marked.
Accessibility: Barrier-free access to the administration is possible via the lift on the Batthyanystiege (Sisi Museum). Please book in advance if you wish to use the reading room.
