Modern knowledge center
The Library at Heldenplatz is the central service facility of the Austrian National Library. With seven reading rooms and over 400 individual places to read in a stimulating atmosphere, it provides the perfect place for students, researchers and interested individuals.
Here you can find printed material published from 1851. Furthermore, by buying a day ticket or annual membership card, you have complete access to our wide range of library services, to the Internet and to subscribed databases, as well as electronic magazines.
Whether researching for a hobby or scientific work, enjoy exclusive access to hundreds of years of knowledge in addition to a comprehensive range of modern-day literature. Our librarians will be happy to advise and provide support with scientific » research.
The library and the collections are closed 8 December, 24 December, 25 December, 26 December, 31 December, 1 January 2022 and 6 January 2022.
In the museums the regular opening hours are valid. Exception: On Monday, 27 December and Monday 3 January 2022 the museums are open.
Due to official requirements all reading rooms are closed until presumably 12 December 2021.

Catalogue searches are still possible, but the ordering module has been switched off. Our » reproduction service is still available.All deadlines for the return of lent books outside the library have been extended to 12 December.
The Austrian National Library will automatically extend all currently valid annual library cards of all categories free of charge after the reopening of the library for the duration of the corona-related closure period. Holders do not have to take any further steps.
A modern training centre for all interested parties is being built in the library basement on Heldenplatz. At the same time, the entire public area in the basement is being completely renovated. From 1 September 2021 until probably September 2022, the basement will be closed due to the construction work. Library operations will continue uninterrupted.
Please note the following changes during the construction period:
- Large-format works will be issued at the book issue desk on the ground floor.
- Microforms can be used in the research zone on the ground floor, as can PCs and printouts from the web archive.
- The large format scanner is located in the copy corner.
