Research facility of global renown
With 180,000 objects, the Department of Papyri of the Austrian National Library is one of the largest and most important collections of ancient manuscripts in the world. It holds texts written on papyrus and other writing material of former times such as parchment, ostraca, leather and wood panels. Every one of our objects is a unique original document from ancient times. A representative selection is to be seen at the » Papyrus Museum.
The reading rooms are open again since May 3, 2021. The opening times at Heldenplatz are currently frpm 9 am to 7 pm. Starting May 19, the opening times at Heldenplatz will be 9 am to 9 pm. The collections are open as usual.
In all areas, visitors are required to wear a FFP2-Mask and to keep their distance.
All valid annual tickets are automatically extended free of charge for the duration of the additional closing time, meaning 27 days.
Trainings can not take place on site at the moment. Our range of training courses has been expanded to include webinars, an overview of current dates can be found on the » homepage. We are happy to offer further individually agreed appointments, including online-training courses on pre-academic work for schoolchildren, more information at information@onb.ac.at.
The library and the collections are closed on public holidays, this means also on June 3 (Corpus Christi). In the museums the regular opening times are valid.
