Core task and collection profile

The Literary Archive of the Austrian National Library collects and makes accessible literary estates (lifetime and posthumous) of Austrian authors as well as publishers and philosophers with a literary focus from the 20th century, particularly publishing and editorial archives as well. The criteria for acquiring and accepting lifetime literary estates can be found in our published collection guidelines.

Research and the public

Ever since its establishment as a Department of the Austrian National Library in 1996, the Literary Archive has developed into an important point of contact between science and literary life. The material safeguarding and preservation of the documents are closely connected to the Archive’s ongoing research and publication activities. Exhibitions, readings, scientific conferences and a rich programme of events ensure a lively exchange with the general public. And don’t miss the opportunity to visit our » Literature Museum (Grillparzerhaus, Johannesgasse 6), which we have been managing since April 2015. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, it offers fascinating insights into Austrian literature since the end of the 18th century.
