With 180,000 objects, the Department of Papyri of the Austrian National Library is one of the largest and most important collections of ancient manuscripts in the world. It holds texts written on papyrus and other writing material of former times such as parchment, ostraca, leather and wood panels. Every one of our objects is a unique original document from ancient times. A representative selection is to be seen at the » Papyrus Museum.
The reading rooms and the collections are open until December 23 as usual (Heldenplatz: 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.), then they must be closed to governmental restrictions. The reopening is announced for January 18. We'll keep you informed.
Due to construction works for the relaunch of the Papyrus Museum the reading room of the Department of Papyri is only available after advance announcement. This concerns the usage of publications before 1929. Please contact the service desk of the Department of Papyri via phone (+43 1 53410-425) or the staff at the at book issue desk at Heldenplatz. Publications after 1929 can be used in the main reading room of the Austrian National Library as usual.
