Objects
Books, manuscripts, letters, drawings, photos as well as fascinating objects such as Ernst Jandl’s director’s chair or a model for the “Rose house” from Adalbert Stifter’s novel “Der Nachsommer” will give visitors a close-up experience of literary creativity.
Literary Archives
The Literary Archives of the Austrian National Library gathers lifetime and posthumous bequests of Austrian authors beginning with the 20th century and makes them available for scholarly research.
The Austrian National Library’s Literature Museum is created in the listed former Austro-Hungarian Exchequer Archives at Johannesgasse 6 in the first district of Vienna. The building was constructed in 1844 and is one of the most remarkable examples of Biedermeier architecture in Vienna. Today, it is the ideal place for a literature museum also for a purely literary reason: the Austrian dramatist Franz Grillparzer served as Archive Director in these premises until 1856. His office has survived in its original condition and is an integral part of the building, which for this reason will bear the name Grillparzer House. Since 2015, the Literature Museum contains a comprehensive presentation of Austrian literature in all its variety in a permanent exhibition.
