Reading rooms of the Modern Library (Heldenplatz entrance)

In the reading rooms of the Modern Library (Heldenplatz area) printed matter published from 1851 on (shelf marks with location marker Neu) are made available. A maximum of 10 volumes will be issued at any one time.

Printed matter with year of publication before 1850 (shelf marks with location marker Alt) are made available in the Augustinian Reading Room (the reading room of the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books), other collection objects and literature on the objects is available in the relevant Department. A maximum of 5 volumes/objects is issued at one time.

Reading Room 1 (Main Reading Room)

- Printed matter with location marker Neu Mag and Neu Per with formats A, B, or C (the location marker and the format are parts of the shelf mark). These are mainly books, theses, etc.
- Printed matter with location marker Neu Kat

Delivery times:
Works ordered are at your disposal about 3 hours later. They stay reserved under your name for one week. Extensions are possible.
Last request:
Mon -  Fri at 6 p.m, Sat at 12 noon. All orders placed after this time will be available on the next working day from about 10.30 a.m. onwards (exception for works with location marker Neu Kat: last request Mon -  Fri at 4 p.m., Sat no delivery).

Open access:
About 16,000 volumes, mostly encyclopedias, general source and reference works, handbooks, bibliographies, technical lexicons, technical dictionaries and dictionaries of languages are there on systematic display. Location marker Neu L.
Opening hours:
Mon - Sat  9.00 - 21.0 
Closed from July 27 - 31
Facilities:
Coin-operated and copycard operated copiers for self-service photocopying, laptop workstations, W-LAN, terminal for catalogue searches (terminals for Internet research and further terminals for catalogue research are at the information desk and on the lower ground floor).

Reading Room 2 (Austriaca Reading Room)

Open access:
Encyclopedias, general source and reference works, handbooks, bibliographies etc. on Austrian history and culture; systematic display. Location marker Neu Aut.

Reading Room 3 (Newspaper and Periodical Reading Room)

Current newspapers and periodicals, not yet bound (mainly newspapers of recent weeks and periodicals of the current year) – newspapers and periodicals already bound are available in Reading Room 4 (Large Format Reading Room).

Delivery times:
newspapers and periodicals not freely accessible in the reading room must be ordered from the staff in reading room 6. They are handed over on Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. (immediate issue) 
Open access:
the most frequently used newspapers and periodicals are laid out in the reading room for your immediate use, arranged in categories (categories 1 – 40).

Laptop workstations, W-LAN, terminals for catalogue search, self-service copiers

Reading Room 4 (Large Format Reading Room)

- Printed matter with location marker Neu Mag and Neu Per with formats D, E or F (the location marker and the format are parts of the shelf mark). These are mainly newspapers and periodicals that are already bound (current numbers of newspapers and periodicals, not yet bound, are lying in Reading Room 6, the Newspaper and Periodical Reading Room, but also large format books.
- Due to renovation of the Albertina reading room: printed matter with location marker Alb. 
- CD ROMs
are to be used at the issue desk of Reading Room 4.

Microfilms (shelf mark with media identification MF), microfiches (call number with media identification MFS), audio-visual media
Special service offer: anniversaries and birthday newspapers

Microform readers; reader printer machine for preparation of reenlargements of microforms on paper (= reader printer copies) (can be done by yourself or by staff); CD player
