The Department of Manuscripts is regarded as the central core of the Austrian National Library and houses both one of the world’s most important holdings of manuscripts and a large number of autographs and closed collections.
In April 2008 the departments of „Manuscripts, Autographs, and Closed Collections“ and of „Incunabula, Old and Valuable Books“ were joined. Use of the holdings takes place in the Augustinian Reading Room.
