Articles and essays

Articles or essays are in most cases not recorded in the Library’s catalogues.
The relevant newspaper or periodical or the collected volume in which the article appeared must be ordered in the reading room.

Newspaper articles

When you are looking for a newspaper article the period of the article sought is relevant – especially when there are no exact details (title, date, page) available.

Articles from old newspapers

If the time when the newspaper article sought is more than ten to twenty years back, the search for a specific topic is, without exact details (date, name of newspaper, possibly page number), particularly time-consuming, since the newspapers have to be leafed through. Newspapers that have already been microfilmed are no longer handed over in the original, but can be read in the microform reading rooms (rooms 4 and 5) in the underground area at the Heldenplatz. They do not have to be pre-booked and are placed at your disposal within a few minutes.

You can consult a list of microfilmed newspapers either directly in the reading rooms named above or at the information desk at the Heldenplatz.

More recent newspaper articles – electronically perusable in full text

The area of the Austrian National Library called “Databases – Electronic Research” offers search possibilities in about 50 newspaper databases. Here you can quickly and comfortably search for articles in Austrian and foreign newspapers and periodicals, using whatever search terms you choose.

Essays, scholarly articles (that appeared in compendia, not individually)

Articles and essays are not recorded in most catalogues (exception: “Catalogue from 1992 on”).

Search for articles in the “Catalogue from 1992 on”

In the “Catalogue from 1992 on” not only books, periodicals, etc. are recorded, but also a great number of articles. These are marked in the list of results with the identification code “ART”.

About 800,000 articles from compendium works, table of contents

In the “Catalogue from 1992 on” you can find about 800,000 articles. These are contributions found in collected essays, festschriften, congress reports, and exhibition catalogues.

In the full display of the data file you can see which compendium work the article comes from, and you can then order the desired volume. In the data file you will find also the scanned list of contents.

Articles specific to women (Ariadne)

In the “Catalogue from 1992 on” you can find articles from collective works, periodicals, etc. on women and gender studies from about 1990 on, sometimes with abstracts. If you have a particular interest in literature specific to women we recommend our special catalogue  "Ariadne".

Digital reading room

In the “Digital reading room” ANNO of the Austrian National Library you can read newspapers and periodicals online.

External bibliographic and full text databases

The Austrian National Library has subscribed to various external databases. With the help of these you can obtain exact bibliographical details of articles, or in many cases even receive the full text (see “External databases”).
