Browser settings necessary for researching in the catalogues

To make optimal use of the catalogues it is unfortunately not possible to use just any browser or to block certain scripts.

Supported browsers

To secure the best possible security for the data (protection from viruses, bugs, and spyware) it is recommended that you always use a browser version that is as up-to-date as possible, since those always have the latest security updates. You can download the current versions by using the links given on the right.

If you use Windows XP or Mac OS X, you make use of the automatic system update function so as to constantly receive the current updates for Internet Explorer or Safari.

Browser settings

Enabling JavaScript

JavaScript is enabled with all browsers as default, and manual enabling should not be necessary. But you can check the setting as follows and if necessary enable it:

Firefox: choose in the Windows menu "Extras", in the Mac OS X menu "Firefox", the option “settings”. In "Web Features" tick "enable JavaScript”. Confirm with OK.

Internet Explorer: in the "Extras" menu choose the option “internet options”. Under “Security” choose the desired zone (in case of doubt choose “Internet”). Click on “reset stage”. Under "Active Scripting" choose the option “Enable”.

Opera: in the menu "Extras" choose the options “Settings”; in the advanced range click on the option “Inhalt/Darstellung” (content features). There “enable JavaScript” must be ticked.

Safari: in the “Safari” menu choose the option “Settings”. In the range “Clearance” under “Web content” the option “enable JavaScript” must be active.

Enabling cookies

Cookies are enabled as default in all browsers, and a manual enabling should not be necessary. However, you can check the setting as follows and if necessary enable:

Firefox: in the Windows menu "Extras", in Mac OS X in the menu "Firefox" choose the option “Settings”. In "Datenschutz" (protection of data) click on the “+” beside “cookies”. Tick here the option “Accept cookies”. Confirm with OK.

Internet Explorer: in the "Extras" menu choose the option "Internet options". There in the “Clearance” range choose the desired zone (in case of doubt choose “Internet”). Click on “reset stage”. Under “accept saved cookies” click on “Enable” (or “Input request”, if you want to be asked at every cookie). In the same way, at "Accept cookies per session (not saved)" choose "Enable" or "Input request”. After ending of the settings confirm with a double OK.

Opera: In the menu “Extras" choose the option “Settings”. In the “Advanced” range click on the option “Cookies”. Then, under “Normal cookies” set the option “Accept all cookies”.

Safari: In the "Safari" menu choose the option “Settings”. In “Clearance” under “Accept cookies” either the option “Always” or “Only from websites I visit” must be enabled.

Deleting cache

Many problems with website displays can be solved if you delete the browser cache.

Firefox: Under "Settings" (in Windows in the "Extras" menu, in Mac in "Firefox” menu) click on “Advanced”  (cogwheel symbol). Click on the tab “Network” and then under “Cache” click “Delete now”. Close the window with “OK”.

Internet Explorer: In the "Extras" menu choose the option “Internet options”.
