Reproductions

General information

The Austrian National Library offers a reproduction service (incurring charges) of its own holdings (copies, scans, microfilm duplicates).
The Austrian National Library is Austria‘s central archival library. It follows that reproductions of its holdings can be made only in accordance with strict conservation conditions. In cases of doubt the responsible library staff member decides on the possible form of reproduction.

For compliance with copyright, personal and other rights the client alone bears responsibility.

For objects protected by copyright the following rules apply: copying or downloading of whole books, whole periodical numbers, or of music notes is forbidden. Similarly, the making of full copies of videos, audio-cassettes, and CD’s is not allowed. For works not protected by copyright the following applies: the reproduction of whole works is on grounds of conservation possible only in digital form or on microfilm.
On the possibility of having copies made of objects in the Departments, please seek information in the relevant Department.

Types of reproduction

Copies

The Library places at your disposal in all work areas copying machines or makes it possible to produce copies. To avoid damage to the books, please do not apply strong pressure to the backs while doing your own copying. Copies from newspaper volumes and other large format items bigger than A4 can be made only by library staff, on conservation grounds.
There is the possibility of making paper copies (so-called reader printer copies) of microfilms or microfiches. You may make these copies yourself or have them made by staff. Reader printer copies of security films may be made only by staff. So the job must be given in commission.

Digitised material, microfilm duplicates, photos

Making of digitised material (images) or microfilm duplicates can be requested in person at the book issue areas of Reading Room 1 and 4. There is also a public scanner at your disposal. New microfilms of holdings are no longer being made. Please order instead digital reproductions. Production of analogues or digital photos of holdings of the Austrian National Library by clients themselves is not permitted. Information regarding photos, development of photos, and laboratory scans can be obtained from the Picture Archive.

Written ordering of reproductions

If you have no chance of coming to the Austrian National Library in person you can order reproductions in writing. We ask for your understanding that on conservation and legal grounds not every type of reproduction you may wish can always be carried out.
In every case please give your full address, even when you send us a commission by e-mail of fax. Otherwise we cannot fulfil your order because of our accounting needs. For the consignment there are various surcharges depending on the way the material is sent.
